First lecture: “The Aeginetans at the Munich Glyptotheke”
The history of the discovery of the pedimental sculptures from the temple of Athena Aphaia and their eventful transfer to Munich after their purchase by Ludwig I of Bavaria. Discussion of these superb sculptures and a turning point in art history from the late archaic to the very early classical period.
Second lecture: “The Bavarian Age in Greece”
The efforts to create a modern European state according to prevailing western models and the recommendations for the urban planning of the new capital. The role played by Ludwig I of Bavaria and his interventions in Greek affairs during Otto’s reign.
Two two-hour lectures on Wednesday afternoon, 1 and 8 June (6.30 – 9.00)
Morning repetition on Thursday morning, 2 and 9 June (11.00 – 1.30)
In October, Kostas Karamalis will continue the theme with lectures on “Bavaria and its 19th-century German context”. Both lecture series will prepare us for a five-day visit to Munich programmed for late October.
